iPhone Dev Team Releases 2.2 jailbreak - Quickpwn for iphone 3G
Author: admin // Category: jailbreak iphoneThe iPhone Dev Team have released a version of QuickPwn that will work with the latest iPhone firmware, version 2.2. The software, which is available for both Mac and Windows users, will allow third-party apps to be loaded as well as other unofficial modifications to the handset. However it is not a baseband unlock.

In fact, while their latest release supports the most up-to-date firmware, the Dev Team still maintain that those hoping for an unlocked iPhone should hold off from updating to 2.2. The release significantly changes the iPhone’s baseband, and as such there’s a possibility that the Team could not be able to unlock the handset for use on any GSM network.
“GOLDEN RULE: If you have a 3G iPhone and want potential soft unlock in the near future do NOT use QuickPwn, and do not use the official ipsw or the iTunes update process without using PwnageTool” iPhone Dev Team
Of course, if you’re happy with your carrier (and many are), the advice is to update to 2.2 using iTunes, then use QuickPwn to Jailbreak and add Cydia and Installer. Everyone else will have to wait a little longer.

An unlocked iPhone 3G appears to be closer to reality.
Just two days after Apple released its iPhone 2.2 update, the iPhone Dev Team has released a jailbreak of the firmware.

The team on Saturday posted to its blog QuickPwn for 2.2 and Pwnage for 2.2 for Windows and Macintosh machines along with instructions on how to jailbreak iPhone 3G phones on 2.2.
The blog also includes a word of caution about baseband, the chip that controls the connection between the phone and the mobile phone network:
Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features). The 2.2 update for the iPhone 3G contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband. This could be bad for certain people, depending on your ultimate aim.
The iPhone Dev Team is still working to unlock the 3G, but it has proven a tough nut to crack, mostly because of the baseband technology. You can unlock your iPhone 3G to use it on another carrier by modifying the SIM card, but what the iPhone Dev Team is trying to accomplish is a software-based unlock that you would just download and install.
