The iPhone is becoming a more and more popular product on eBay, however, there are important things to consider when purchasing an iPhone on eBay.

When it comes to eBay it is always caveat emptor – buyer beware. This is true when you are looking to purchase iPhones on eBay as well. If you take measures to be sure that you know what you are buying, then you can get a really great iPhone deal. However, if you are not careful, you will be disappointed and possibly out of a lot of money. This is what you need to be aware of when buying iPhones on eBay.

First, know what you are buying and if you are not sure ask the seller before you bid. Some things to look out for are conflicting information between the title and the extended description. For example there was a listing for an unlocked 16 GB iPhone. That is what the title said. In the description is stated very clearly that this phone is locked but then went on to say that they are using it with T-Mobile, so it is clearly unlocked. The best way to resolve issues like this is to send the seller an email and ask for clarification. Save this email and the response you get so that if you are the winning bidder you have recourse if the iPhone is not as described.

Know the difference between unlocked and locked. Unlocked means that the firmware has been hacked and now you can insert any chip that will work on any networks. In the US the iPhone will work only on cell phone networks AT&T and T-Mobile. This has nothing to do with the chip and everything to do with the wiring. The iPhone will only work on the radio frequencies that AT&T and T-Mobile provide. The terms “unlocked” and “new, unopened box” are incompatible. You have to open up the box and hack into the firmware in order to unlock the iPhone. Apple does not ship unlocked iPhones.

Another thing to look out for when buying iPhones on eBay is to know if the phone is refurbished, new, or used. A refurbished iPhone is one that Apple (hopefully) has taken from not working properly to a like new state. This is a great way to get an inexpensive iPhone. However, an ethical seller will clearly state that this is a refurbished item. Les scrupulous sellers may not disclose this. If unsure, ask. New and used are self-explanatory.

Be alerted to the fact that there are phones that are similar in appearance to the iPhone but they are not iPhones. On eBay, you will see phones called A88, iPhone, PDA, etc. which are not Apple iPhones. Make sure that the manufacturer of any iPhone you purchase is Apple and not CECT.

Finally make sure that you are aware of the sellers return policies and only pay through PayPal using a credit card or pay directly with a credit card.

An educated consumer stands the best chance of getting a good iPhone deal from eBay but you must be careful.

(That way, he could read e-books at the cafe while exuding an aura of pretentious artiness, instead of pretentious geekiness.)

5. SayWhere

You get used to typing on the iPhone after some time, but punching in addresses to look up directions is by far the biggest drag. DialDirections was the first to introduce speech-recognition capabilities to the iPhone with SayWhere, which translates users’ speech into queries for Google Maps, Yelp, Traffic or Yellow Pages. This app is great because it keeps drivers eyes on the road instead of on the virtual keyboard of their iPhone.

4. Shazam

Everyone’s familiar with this scenario: You hear a really catchy, unfamiliar song on the radio and you have no idea what it’s called. You hum it to yourself repeatedly and attempt to memorize the lyrics, only to forget it after slamming a few shots at the bar. Shazam will never leave you struggling to recollect these thoughts again: Hold the iPhone up to a speaker playing the unknown tune and the app will identify it — album, artist and song title — just like that.

You’d have to be living on a different planet (or a retirement home) if you haven’t heard of Guitar Hero, the game that gets players to twitch their fingers compulsively along with the beat of their favorite songs. Developer Tapulous took the same idea to make an extremely addictive rhythm game called Tap Tap Revenge. Tapping blinking lights on a screen to catch tunes isn’t exactly the same as rocking out on plastic guitars and drum pads, but it’s still highly addictive. And Tap Tap Revenge is so popular it’s even offering the option to download new tracks to tap to, similar to Guitar Hero and Rock Band’s music stores.

2. Pandora

Whoa whoa whoa — free downloaded music on a portable device? You don’t say. This app is cool as hell on the iPhone as Pandora’s alternative music distribution made this happen. This apps will play that artist’s music as well as similar tunes you might like and you can add a station for any artist you like. With the wealth of new bands out there, what a better way to find new music?

The easiest way to create an IPhone application is to purchase software that is made for this purpose.  If you can follow the prompts on a software package, you can create your own I-Phone application. This is the best way that you can get started with this process.    An I-Phone application is called a widget.  It is software that is relatively easy to create.  You can go to Google and download software for creating Widgets and use that to create your application.   You will create your I-Phone application by using software that you download to your own computer.  The widget or application will be created on your own computer. 

It is not difficult to get widget tools.  You can get gadgets or widgets, both are on Google and Yahoo respectively.  You can also get generic widget software to create your application.  If you decide to create and distribute through the Apple site, you can download an application builder that gives you all of the tools that you need to create your own widget and get started with building the widget, debugging it and also distributing it.  You will need to go through the debug step before you can upload your application to your Apple account. 

If you are very tech savvy, you might want to create your own application by using basic internet tools. You can download free tools that will enable you to create your own applications.  Many of the applications for the I-Phone are internet related.  By working with a site and basic IPhone technology skills, you can create an I-Phone application.  If you can build a widget, you can make money on it by selling it outright on your own website, without having to use the Apple site. 

You can get free IPhone application software by looking for web software that you can download for free.  The same software that can be used for web design and other web applications on your computer can be used to make applications for your I-Phone. 

If you have application creation software for your website, you are all set.  You should create the application on your own computer website and then download it to your I-Phone.  Creating applications for the I-Phone are just like creating anything for a website. 

If you do not have a website, you should get one.  Whereas it used to be very expensive to have a website designed years ago, much has changed.  There are many web applications out there that will help you design your own website.  You can also download applications for free.  If you have a website, chances are that your hosting site will have tools that you can use to not only create your site, but also to create applications for your I-Phone.  You can download the applications that you create on your computer to your I-Phone just as you would download any other application.  You can choose to use the application for yourself, or you can also choose to distribute it to others. 

There are various web tools that you can use for free online.  You should look for web tools that are both PC and Mac compatible.  Just as the I-Pod is compatible with both PC and Mac users, you should be sure that the tools you use are compatible with a Mac product. 

Creating applications is not difficult.  Once you understand how to use software that can create the applications that you want, you can usually find tutorials online.  Make your first application an easy one, such as a feed from a local news site.  This will give you a general idea of the basic components of the I-Phone application.
